Advice For New Bloggers - What Worked For Me Early On

I had a very interesting email come in this morning from one of my readers asking me how for a little guidance on blogging. He is about to launch what sounds like a very interesting blog and wanted to know how I was able to get my blog off the ground. I answered his email and then decided I’d write a quick post on the topic so others can possibly get a little motivation and learn what has worked well for me recently.

There are so many topics to write about and an equal number of ways to promote a blog. That being said, I want to point out that these are ways my blog gained a readership. Other blogs have succeeded in completely different ways. I wouldn’t say any particular way of bringing readers to your site is better or worse than another. As such, let’s open a discussion in the comment and share with each other various ways we’ve succeeded on this topic.

DailyBrilliance And The Digg Effect

As many of you likely noticed yesterday, DailyBrilliance fell victim to the Digg Effect. Actually, “fell victim” isn’t the appropriate term as we were completely obliterated by the wave of traffic! It really is a double-edged sword. I want as many people as possible to come to the site, enjoy the articles and participate in comments. However, the site just wasn’t prepared to handle it yesterday.

The site was not cached yesterday when a story hit the front page; This is completely my fault and I will definitely fix that for next time. Also, I am sure I can do a better job of optimizing Apache to serve these pages to you faster and more reliably.

I will spend a good bit of time this weekend optimizing the server so it is better prepared to handle the spikes in traffic that a front-page Digg story can bring. I sincerely apologize to everyone that tried to access this site and could not get through.
